Dr Benjamin Sarfo is a Lecturer specialising in Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship with a focus on MSMEs Management, Food Quality and Safety, New Venture and Product Development, Economics of Innovation and Grant and Project Management within the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension Education at the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Asante Mampong. Early in his career, he served as an Administrative Accountant in the Department of Community Development under the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, where he performed creditably at post and managed the finances of the Community Development Vocational & Technical Institute in Wa and Sunyani prudently. In academia, Dr Sarfo has since trained, mentored and built the capacity of over 500 students in agribusiness and entrepreneurship and supervised about five (5) postgraduate research projects. His active position in departmental programme planning and research is exemplified by his role as coordinator for undergraduate and post-graduate research seminars and action research series for students.
As an emerging researcher, his research output numbers up to thirteen (13) publications in high-impact journals, predominantly focusing on agribusiness, food safety, access to credit, and value chain dynamics across Africa.
Sarfo has been a principal investigator and member of numerous projects to strengthen the agricultural commodity value chain in Ghana, notably securing over USD 200,000 from the Ghana Skills Development Fund for Tackling post-harvest loss in fruit and vegetables using cost effective technologies in AAMUSTED-Mampong; over USD 120,000 in funding to provide Entrepreneurship Training and Reintegration support to PSED-MED beneficiaries commissioned by GIZ; over USD 80,000 to provide services in product development and enhancement training and facilitations of product registrations /certification for entrepreneurs in Greater Accra and Ashanti Region commissioned by GIZ; over USD 100,000 to organize Farmer Business School and Group Dynamics Training for Tomato farmers Bono and Ahafo Region among others.
In line with advancing Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDPs), he currently holds the position of Technical Officer for the Agripreneurship project under the Kosmos Innovation Centre Project, where he was a member of the team that facilitated over USD 100,000 in funding for emerging student agropreneurs. He once served as the Team lead and secretary of the National Business Incubation team of the Ghana Federation of Forest and Farm Project, which aims to build the capacity of over 10,000 youth and smallholder farmers in forest and farm product development.
Dr. Sarfo has consulted for both international and domestic organization including the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization- Forest and Farm Project, Star Ghana Foundation as a Project Officer through the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, OXFAM in Africa, GIZ, Center for Development Research and Agro-Innovations- Ghana, Center for Migration Studies-University of Ghana, Bureau for Community Action and Development (BUCAD), Ghana, Ghana Poultry Project, Institute for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Solution and the Northern Center for Sustainable Development Management in the area of Agribusiness, enterprise and product development, and smallholder farmers livelihood enhancement. Through his consultancy and engagements, he successfully trained over 200 MSMEs on product development, business plans and product certification at the Food and Drugs Authority and Ghana Standard Authority, built the capacity of over 2000 smallholder farmers in business incubation of forest and farm products, climate smart practices, Agro-processing, assisting them in developing viable business plans to secure funding to promote their enterprises. Sarfo was instrumental in establishing the Ghana Society of Agribusiness Scientists, the first professional society dedicated to agribusiness research and academia, where he serves as its first General Secretary. His dedication to the development and sustainability of agribusiness is of great desire, and he envisions an ecosystem of entrepreneurs along the agricultural commodity value chain who seek to advance the strides of agribusiness in the development of Ghana.
