ABOUT US

Brief History

The Department of Biological Sciences Education started in 2010 as an undergraduate programme, BSc. Biological Sciences Education, under the then Department of Science Education of the Faculty of Science and Environment Education, University of Education, Winneba. The programme grew and officially metamorphosed into the Department of Biological Sciences Education in the 2020/21 academic year under the Faculty of Science Education of the newly-created Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Asante Mampong campus. The Department started with 21 students reading the programme, and currently has 909 undergraduate students and 42 postgraduate students.

The Department’s programmes are aligned with the Mandate, Mission and Niche Area of AAMUSTED by laying strong foundations for students to fit in education, industry and academia.

Career Prospects

Undergraduate

Our undergraduate programmes prepare students for placement with the Ghana Education Service and private education institutions. Our students are also uniquely placed for positions in hospital labs, private labs, allied health institutions, pharmaceutical institutions, research institutions and non-governmental organisations, banks and financial institutions, policy think-tanks etc.

Postgraduate

Our postgraduate programmes prepare students for careers with the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, Colleges of Education and Universities. Our students are also prepared for industrial placement with various biology-oriented research institutes, wildlife management institutes, Environmental Protection Agency, Zoos, National Parks, Botanic Gardens, Forestry Commission, medical research institutes, pharmaceutical industry, fisheries industry, security agencies, financial institutions, manufacturing industry, non-governmental organizations, etc.

Hands-on Teaching and Learning

The BSc. Biological Sciences Education Programme is structured towards academic excellence and practical competences. It inculcates in students the principles, critical skills and knowledge needed by biological scientists to enable them function effectively as researchers, industrialists, industrial biologists, teachers and allied professionals.

The postgraduate programmes offer unique opportunities to enhance the skills and knowledge gained through undergraduate and previous graduate studies. Our postgraduate programmes also improve the research abilities of our students and prepares them for improved teaching at pre-tertiary and tertiary levels by structured theoretical and practical training in the various disciplines of biology.

STAFF

The Department currently has seven staff – two senior lecturers, one lecturer, three assistant lecturers, two laboratory technicians and one administrator.
